Our Community Profile: Murray’s Garden Centre and The Grounds Café

March 10, 2020 by RendellShea

We love supporting local businesses in our neighbourhood and beyond! This week, we feature Murray’s Garden Centre and The Grounds Café.

Murray’s and The Grounds are a fifteen-minute drive from the Rendell Shea Manor in the gorgeous town of Portgual Cove-St. Philip’s. Read more about their space and history below!

The Grounds Café

Murray’s Garden Centre is located on Portugal Cove Road in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, NL and is home to our 70-acre farm and headquarters.

What started as a simple vegetable stand has now grown into a full nursery, garden centre, and organic farm. Within our more than 11,000 square feet of greenhouse space, we produce a wide range of hardy plants. We grow many products on site that are available in our retail store, including annual bedding plants and herbaceous perennials, robust deciduous trees and shrubs, evergreens, roses, vines, and ground covers. We also carry many tools and products to help keep your garden and landscape in top shape.

As with our landscape company, our garden centre employs knowledgeable team members that are always willing to answer questions and help you find the right fit for your garden or landscape needs.

Baked goods and farm fresh meals!

Within our garden centre we have The Grounds Café that offers daily baked goods and farm fresh meals. The Grounds is a farm to fork cafe that sources ingredients grown on site or from other local farms. Our café provides a bright interior green space perfect for enjoying an afternoon of great food and company here at Murray’s.

Our Community Profile: Bannerman Brewing Co.

March 4, 2020 by RendellShea

We love supporting local businesses in our neighbourhood! This week, we feature the brewery and coffee shop, Bannerman Brewing Co.

Bannerman is a pleasant four-minute stroll from the Rendell Shea Manor. Read more about their space and history below!

Good times at Bannerman!

Found in the east end of downtown of St. John’s, BANNERMAN BREWING CO. is a locally owned and operated brewery, tasting room, cafe and event space. Home to a lighthearted crew, we have a passion for crafting artisanal beer and sharing it with our community.

Coconut. Artisanal beer. Pineapple. Only one of which is native to Newfoundland!

To know the story of our brewery is to know the history of our neighbourhood. Long before we poured our first beer, BANNERMAN BREWING CO. was the location of the city’s historic East Fire Station. Originally constructed after the Great Fire of 1892, it was rebuilt in the 1950s and still stands today at the corner of Duckworth and Ordnance Street.

But the building is only half of the story. During the Great Fire, some 11,000 people lost their homes. Displaced, but not defeated, residents banded together with nothing more than a few belongings to set up a tent city in Bannerman Park. They weathered the aftermath of the fire and re-built the city. It’s this story of collectivism and community that BANNERMAN BREWING CO. proudly celebrates.

Go grab one of these.

Our taproom features communal tables and table service where you can enjoy beer, coffee, and snacks. Come in and find an empty seat, the person next to you could be your new best friend. For takeaway beer or coffee you can head straight to the bar.

Bannerman Brewing Co. is located at 90 Duckworth Street. Only four minutes on foot from the Rendell Shea Manor! Sleep at our place. Drink at theirs. Repeat.
